How to Maintain Your Commercial Truck

Commercial trucks are high-capacity vehicles that work all the time, so they need to be maintained properly to be able to serve you well and to provide the safety and the efficiency that you expect of them. Here are a few routine maintenance tasks that don’t require a professional mechanic, but should be done regularly to prevent expensive breakdowns and accidents:

  • Tire checks – whenever you prepare to leave for the road, check whether the tires are intact and properly inflated.
  • Brake tests – squealing or grinding brakes are not safe to use, so check them and have them fixed by a mechanic if you notice any issues
  • Visibility – clean the windows of the truck inside and outside, check the mirrors, adjust them and clean them, too, check if the windshield wipers work properly on any and all speed settings and check the truck’s headlights, brake lamps and turn signals as well. Replace cracked lamp covers or dead bulbs yourself or have them replaced by a professional, if necessary.
  • Check fluids – fuel is not the only fluid that needs to be available in sufficient quantities while on the road. Check the level of the brake fluid, of the engine oil, of the transmission fluid, the radiator cooler, the windshield washer and top them all up before you hit the road. It is also a good idea to keep a few gallons of water and some engine oil in the truck for emergencies.

If you are not interested in taking on the maintenance tasks of truck fleet management, consider using maintenance vehicle leasing companies to manage this process.
